The first instruction?
Get a handheld mirror. Well, I had none. Because I was the kind of good girl who always did her homework and studied hard, of course I had to do something to get that mirror. Now.
So I rode my two-wheeler to the hardware store for the piece of shitty plastic that looked like it was made in a sweatshop in China. Then I biked the hell home and relished the little time I had left to do the first exercise, which required that I execute in front of this mirror.
Speaking of the little time remaining, I checked my phone and felt panic arising. My roommate would be back soon. There was nothing like performance under pressure.
Crap.
A series of I-love-myself and I-love-you’s spewed from my mouth, each one sounding more rushed and hysterical and unreal than the previous one. I broke eye contact and laughed until my cheeks hurt. Finally, when I was convinced I could actually say the words and believe even a teensy weensy little bit of the recited statement, I stopped and turned the page to the next exercise.
My jaw dropped.
