The Velvet Chair is Book One in a Dark Erotica Series called 'Velvet Lies.'

Blurb

My name is Mark Matthews. I own half of London, and the part I don’t own, I’m working on.

Life was all going swimmingly well until Michael Redcliff entered my life, demanding that I marry his daughter. Actually, swap demand for blackmail. He’s got goods on me that I want no one else to see, so for the time being I need to be his little lapdog.

I’ll marry his daughter. I’ll give him all the status, money and power he can handle... for as long as it takes me to get a divorce. You see, I can’t renege on our little arrangement – but she can. I give her a week. One week and she’ll be screaming the place down for her legal counsel.

Excerpt - Jennifer

sexy blond in beige silk dress sitting on the black armchairMy hands were visibly shaking. Flexing my fingers repeatedly, I tried to still the tremors, but they were not to be subdued. It was hardly surprising. Today was the day I walked up the aisle and married… a monster. I was under no illusions that Mark Matthews would forgive me for what had happened, and I could hardly blame him. He’d been manipulated and sexually tortured until he could take no more, and then he’d been neatly cornered. He might have agreed to my father’s demands, but he’d come snapping and biting, feral as a wolf.

I sighed. Today was supposed to be a magical day – every little girl’s fantasy. A gigantic cathedral, a sea of flowers, a big fancy dress, and the man of my dreams. I’d imagined it would be filled with tears of happiness and protestations of love. How stupid was I?

Inhaling a shaky breath, I wondered what Mark would do with me. Having always been the sacrificial lamb in this family, today I was being sent off to the slaughterhouse. When I’d mentioned this to Michael, I’d refused to call him ‘Dad’ a long time ago, he’d laughed and told me to stop being so melodramatic. As if that made me feel any better. Dear old Dad couldn’t care less whether I lived or died, so I didn’t waste my breath trying to plead with him. All I had to do was play my part in this charade and he would be happy. I needed to keep Michael happy at all costs. The trouble was, in order to play my part, Matthews had to trust me, and I had a feeling that trying to coax that emotion out of him was going to be almost as impossible as trying to convince the Queen of England to relinquish her throne. Matthews wasn’t the sort to trust easily, and now that I had lost what little ground I had gained with him, I would be back to square one. Wrong, I thought grimly. I was going to be at least twenty stories below square one, trying to claw my way out with nothing more than my bare fingernails. Facing up to facts, I stifled a sob. The man was going to annihilate me.

Excerpt - Mark

As we pulled out of the Savoy’s car park, Jennifer was a mess. I had little sympathy for her. Each heartbeat that tore through my chest was full of fire, which spat sparks and burned like acid. I was sitting next to a traitor. My body throbbed with emotion, and not the good kind.

I had to admit the dress she’d changed into, just a tiny part of the massive trousseau that was now being shipped to my estate, was rather distracting. It was designed in a glistening oyster silk that caught the light every time she moved. It was seductive enough without the two splits that ran up the side of her thighs, and when she’d seated herself in my car, revealing a vast expanse of soft creamy flesh, my blood pressure had taken a direct hit.

My temper was already simmering in a large saucepan full of resentment, but that turned up the heat considerably. I did not want to be attracted to Redcliff’s daughter. I wanted to abhor her with all that was holy. Desire would weaken my anger, and that must not be allowed to happen. I needed to have a stern talk with my overactive libido and let it know who was boss around these parts.

Little did Miss Redcliff know, but she wouldn’t be requiring clothes for the duration of her stay. I would thoughtfully be providing her with all sorts of novel uniforms, and when she began to bore me, she could just go around naked. I’d decided to train her up to be a sex slave extraordinaire, and it was going to be an exacting and rigorous process. She’d be allowed six hours of sleep a day, and the rest of her hours would be accounted for. Cooking, cleaning, ironing, servicing me, pleasing me, attending to her own personal fitness regime, and some more ‘standard’ training sessions.

Failure to comply with her new routine would produce punishments the likes of which she had never experienced. After her first misdemeanour had been dealt with, I didn’t think there would be many more. I was in bastard-mode, and the girl was going to know about it. She had just become my property and I would deal with her however I saw fit. The mark of my ownership would be indelibly printed on her soul by the time I’d finished with her. The damn woman was going to fear the sound of my footsteps, her body would shrink away from me every time I approached her and she would learn to obey my every whisper or suffer the consequences.

My lawyer had already drawn up two sets of papers, one for an annulment and the others pertained to our divorce. It would probably take all the fun out of the arrangement if Jennifer opted for an annulment, so I didn’t intend to scare her witless in the first few days, but I fully expected the divorce papers to be completed inside of a week. I just needed to push the woman to her absolute limit, and then smash her body into the next dimension. If there was one thing I was good at, it was psychological and physical torture. Okay, so that might be two things. In any case, I’d get those papers signed, sealed, and delivered back to Michael Redcliff before the week was out. Piece of cake.

Kate Well, first of all because I was lucky enough to be invited to participate in an anthology about one of my favorite cities. New Orleans has a magic like no place else and I come back from visits there full of inspiration. Every part of the city has so many stories of its own. I hope I did justice to the feel of the Big Easy.

Second, I was glad to have the opportunity to continue the story of Warren and the crew of Evening at Animals. The shifter world in which they live has its own magic that I feel blends with New Orleans, even if the original club is far away in Arizona. The Superstitions are every bit as mystical in their own way. And with all the strife in the world right now, a story about two people from different “races” and backgrounds made me happy. ~ Kate

Tina1

Paranormal beings fascinate me. To have even a tenth of their superpowers—wow. Tell me you wouldn’t like to use a gift for precognition to find out which stocks to buy or whether you’ll get that raise. That said, special gifts do come with drawbacks (doesn’t everything?). A vamp may live forever, if you call that living, but for some, sunlight’s a killer. Weres frequently have bad hair days. A hot reaper like Zekiel and badass demon like Jewel have their own problems. For her, it’s meeting her ‘soul quota’ for Satan. For him, it’s making sure she doesn’t sign everyone up for Hell before he can reap them. As competitors and lovers, they’ve met their match. ~ Tina

Erzabet

Why I wrote the book: I have always been fascinated by New Orleans and the loupe garou legends in the surrounding swamps. The character of Marie Laveau is also one of interest. What if I could combine the two for a spicy tale of love, redemption and voodoo? Thus sprang the impetus for the Root Workers series and the bare bones of Bayou Shadows. There will be many more books to come and I plan to lengthen this first novella a good deal. I also wanted to showcase what it may have been like to be a gay man in those times, consciously on alert from being discovered. Add in the power of a necromancer in Marie Laveau's city and you have a powder keg just waiting to explode.

Delia's character is also one I loved. She wants to know her past, but it is kept hidden from her-for a purpose. There is power in secrets, especially hers. I wanted to explore the loa principle in voodoo and give her a parent who will ultimately help determine if she can navigate the dark side to help save the man she loves. I hope you enjoy the read and remember...there is magic in the moonlight... ~ Erzabet

TeresaBlueMan

The Lion of Frenchman Street started out simply enough: my husband and I spent our last vacation in New Orleans, much of it listening to jazz on Frenchman Street. At one club, I spotted an adorable tattooed female bartender who danced along to the music as she mixed cocktails. I thought she'd make a great character someday. And I knew her hero would be a jazz musician. Being the kind of writer I am, I was pretty sure they'd both be kinky. When I got a chance to write for this collection, I remembered that bar and that bartender and imagined a talented, hardworking sax player, who, like many of the men I'd seen in New Orleans, dressed sharp even in bone-meltingly hot weather. I had no idea who this handsome man really was, though, until I dreamed of a lion. The lion was magnificent, a perfect specimen, until I got closer. Then I could see it had a hole in its ribcage and its heart was bleeding. I woke up knowing that under my hero's gorgeous, Domly surface, he was a hot mess with a broken heart--and a ginger with crazy hair. From there, I could write the tale. ~ Teresa

MeExcerpt

Creole Corsair was not my first attempt at a novella for this anthology, it was actually my third. The first two attempts kept spinning out of control, and I couldn't rein in the characters or storyline to fit the parameters set for the story lengths. I'm a complete pantser, so until I start writing I have no idea where my stories will go. So to do right by the anthology, and the two previous stories I started, I had to set them aside for other projects because they need their own full length books. I finally settled on Sabine and Jasper and came up with a plot I could work into a novella. People say write what you know. What do I know? Unrequited high school love, being the chubby kid, and pirates. LOL So I built a story weaving in those three things, tapping into a 'what if' scenario that all girls who suffered the unrequited feelings of our first love think about...what if he actually did love us too? I hope everyone enjoys my version of that fantasy. ~Wren

LeteishaGirl

I wrote Phenomenal to be a transitional piece in my Lost Series, a collection of standalone novels around a central lost theme. I loved the song Phenomenal by Eminem and Mixed Martial Arts. I thought "what would happen if you had the spirit of a champion but life got in the way? How bad would you fall down?" In Phenomenal, My hero has fallen to the ground. He's beaten, torn into pieces, and gasping for breath. And yet he still gets in the ring. But he's forgotten something...how to fight for himself. That is until he finds a woman who's had the fight beaten out of her too. And yet she doesn't give up. She finds a way to leave her abusive husband, and forces the hero to take a long look at his situation. Someone else's situation can always be worse than your own. If they can get up, you better. And then I took her away from him. Yeah, my hero hated me, and it made him fight harder. That battle between us, he to get his girl back, me to keep her away until he was worthy, created Phenomenal. ~LeTeisha

NewTeaseMB

I joked with the other ladies in the anthology that I wrote this book simply because I like sexy dragons. Because, who doesn't, right? Originally, I wrote a short piece about a group of dragon shifters for a different anthology call, but I loved it so much I decided I'd rather turn it into a series. Playing With Fire is a prequel of sorts to that first piece and will be followed by the rest of the series about the men of Komodo Security and Private Investigations--all dragon shifters. I like the idea of exploring dragons from multiple cultures and histories, and taking some of the different elements of dragon lore and turning them around for a different take. So...keep a watch out for the next book in the Komodo Securities series! ~Margaret

Our wonderful friend and fellow NOLA Naughty Nin9 author, Amanda Byrnes, passed away in July. We dedicate this anthology to her memory. The loss has touched us deeply. But none more so than by her friend and critique partner, fellow NOLA Naughty Nin9 author Liv Rancourt, who on behalf of Amanda will share some things about why Amanda wrote her story...

This is a story about friendship. It's a story about hundreds of shared emails and more than a few glasses of wine. It's a story about laughter, and understanding, and respect.

And that's just me n' Amanda. The story of Sultry contains many of the same elements. Last January, one of the original Naughty Nine authors had to bow out, so I emailed my friend and critique partner Amanda K. Byrne, and asked her if she'd be interested in filling the slot. She agreed, and after we worked out the details, I was treated to a stream of emails. "What about this? Do you think it would work?" She had lots of great ideas - I've never known another writer who could top her for spinning plot bunnies - but nothing clicked. Then in the end of January, she sent me the first scene of a story. Ash, the hero, is a virgin. Rory, the heroine and his very best friend, is not. She's the only woman he's ever felt comfortable with, and, to use Amanda's own words, "...the point ... is to gender-flip the whole 'virgin heroine asks the player hero to take her virginity'" thing. Ash and Rory were friends first, and the steps that led them to becoming lovers makes a fabulously sweet and hot story. Sultry came together fast - Amanda could crank out the words (good words, too!), and my beta-reading comments were mostly along the lines of "OMG YOU WROTE A 25 PAGE SEX SCENE AND IT WORKS AND I HATE YOU". Nah, not really. :)  I didn't hate her at all. I admired her, and respected her, and damn but I miss her. Amanda unexpectedly passed away on July 5th, leaving behind friends and family and her long-time S.O. I hope you enjoy Sultry, and that you seek out Amanda's other work. She had so much talent and so much heart, and we'll all feel her loss for a very long time. ~Liv

LivBlond

The germ of the idea for Change of Heart came from a scholarly article I read about Dr. James Barry, a 19th century British military surgeon. He was incredibly gifted, accomplished, and known for being rude, and after he died, the serving-woman who prepared his body discovered he was a woman.

His story has been claimed by feminists, and more recently by students of trans history. It's impossible to know how Dr. Barry viewed himself - as a highly intelligent woman who did what was necessary to practice medicine at a time when women were forbidden to do so, or as a man who happened to have a different biology. Either way, Dr. Barry fascinates me. There are very few records of trans people from before the 1970s, and I wanted to explore how it might have been to live with that kind of secret. We'd agreed to set all our stories in New Orleans, and since few US cities have a more colorful history, I basically just picked a year and went with it. I hope I captured something of the time and place, and I hope you enjoy my sweet and spicy little story. ~ Liv

Teresa Noelle Roberts writes erotic romance and romantic erotica for passionate people who like tales of true love on the spicy side. Also a poet and fantasy writer, she has a particular fondness for paranormal and fantasy tales in which the romantic, the supernatural, and of course the erotic mingle. She's also drawn to things kinky.

Born in the Finger Lakes region of New York, she now lives in southeastern Massachusetts with her own personal hero and a clowder of exceedingly large cats. When she's not writing, you might find Teresa working in the vegetable garden...or cooking up a storm...or knitting something bright and colorful....or on a beach, regardless of the weather. If you can't find her at all, well, she has to get ideas for all those sexy stories somewhere.

LeTeisha Newton: So I think this is the part where I’m supposed to say something super cool, win you over, and make you my life-long superfan…OR wait, is that how I am about my anime collection?

Probably. Basically, I’m an author, blogger, geek, and villain lover (Joker IS MINE!). There shouldn’t be any surprise then that I tend to love my heroes a bit broken, all messed up, and in need of someone who understands them just the way they are. Ha, my heroines are right there with them. You see, love is nice, it’s sweet. It can be all rainbows and glowing stars. And then it can be dark, twisted, hurtful, and feel so good you have to scream about it. So I write like that. From one side of the spectrum to the other, because that’s real. That’s life. And that’s what we crave–-delving into a fantasy world or not.

Margaret Madigan: I write romance for Entangled Publishing and Evernight Publishing. I write and indie-publish romance and sci-fi through M&M Publishing.

I'm an Oregon Ducks fan. I'm a donut and pastry addict (pretty much any carbs, really). I like cats. I'm terrified of balloons. When I’m not writing you’ll find me in a college classroom teaching English and, of course, wrangling my family.

Sadly, Amanda passed away July 2016. When she wasn't plotting ways to sneak her latest shoe purchase past her partner, Amanda wrote sexy, snarky romance and urban fantasy. She liked her heroines smart and unafraid to make mistakes, and her heroes strong enough to take them on.

When she wasn't writing, she was reading, drinking hot chocolate, and trying not to destroy her house with her newest DIY project. She lived in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, and no, it really doesn’t rain that much.

Liv Rancourt: I write romance: m/f, m/m, and v/h, where the h is for human and the v is for vampire…or sometimes demon. I write funny. I don’t write angst. When I’m not writing I take care of tiny premature babies or teenagers, depending on whether I’m at home or at work. My husband is a soul of patience, my dog is the cutest thing evah(!), and we’re up to three ferrets.

The Rannigan's Redemption Collection

by Pandora Spocks

Rannigan’s Redemption is the story of the complicated relationship between sexy high-profile Manhattan attorney Michael Rannigan and sassy red-haired fellow lawyer Maggie Flynn.

Michael and Maggie meet at a job fair, where he hires her practically on the spot. She’s smart and good her job. But there’s more to it than he’s willing to admit. He’s attracted to her. Which doesn’t make sense. She’s nothing like the women he dates. She’s way too smart, for one thing.

And Maggie’s in love with him, too. Realizing the situation is all but hopeless, she contents herself with working with him.

One night tears them apart. And from that point they’re both just running rogue, each making questionable decisions in their professional and personal lives.

A moment of desperation brings them back together. After Michael has burned all his bridges, Maggie’s the only one willing to stand by him.

And he’s grateful. He knows he needs to make it up to her, to somehow find redemption for himself.

Rannigan's Redemption was originally released as three separate novels. Now, the entire story is available in one sexy, exciting, heartfelt, 5-STAR collection.

Here's what readers are saying...

"If you decided to read this story, you should prepare yourself. The journey of Michael and Maggie will carry you through a gripping narrative of suspense and enticement. The world of defense law surfaces as dark and decadent, driving the main characters to the fringes of heightened intensity. The character motivations are easy to understand, but as the story unravels, highly charged emotions plunge the characters into uncharted territories. Pandora has outdone herself on this story. A great read."

"...Pandora Spocks has an incredibly original new voice in erotica and romance. This particular offering is truthfully raw, something you don't see often in the romance genre. She does a really nice job transporting her reader into the cut throat world of defense law, and in the end you really don't know what's coming next. ...it's the book fifty shades should have been."

"Rannigan's Redemption: Running Rogue took my breath away. The continuing story of Michael and Maggie is both spicy and heartwarming. In erotic romance books I am used to a ton of heat and not much else. But this author has accomplished what many others in this genre have not. She created memorable, multi-dimensional characters who undergo tough transformations on their journey to love. This book is a must read for those who enjoy their romance with some soul-touching depth."

"...there are very few books that made me bawl like a baby. One was Fine Things by Daniel Steele. And that's who Pandora Spocks' writing can be compared to. Steele, Jackie Collins. She's one of the finest Indie writer I've met."

"...The finale is an emotional powerhouse... "

How about a sexy sample of Rannigan's Redemption...

One night in late January, Michael attended a black-tie gala at the Met. His date Kimberley had cancelled at the last minute, suddenly called out of town for an emergency photo shoot. She was replacing someone who’d dropped out sick.

He rolled his eyes. Because God knows we need more swimsuit photos, he thought irritably. On the other hand, flying solo tonight might not be the worst thing in the world. He glanced around at scores of beautiful women draped in designer gowns. I’m always up for something new.

He made his way to the bar where he ordered a bourbon. “Make mine a dirty martini,” said a smoky female voice to his right. He glanced over to see a stunning blonde in a sparkling strapless black gown with a deep plunging neckline showcasing stellar tits and a slit up the left side revealing an exquisite leg.

Michael smiled slyly and said, “You know what they say about women who order dirty martinis.”

The woman glanced at him sideways. “No. What do they say?” she challenged.

“They say that women who order dirty martinis are enchanting, gorgeous, and intelligent.” He grinned playfully. “I’m Michael Rannigan.”

The woman laughed. “Well, Michael Rannigan, I see that you’re blessed with the gift of gab. I’m Alexis Bennett.”

“Nice to meet you, Alexis Bennett. Tell me, are you here with your husband? Boyfriend? Lesbian lover?” He gave his best mischievous smirk.

She laughed again. “You are shameless,” she said shaking her head. “No, sadly, they all stayed home. I’m here by myself tonight.”

“We can’t have that, can we?” he grinned. “Where is your table?”

Alexis pointed to the far side of the room. “I’m at 17.”

Michael shook his head. “That will never do. You’re at the wrong table.”

She frowned. “Which is the right table?”

“Mine, of course, number 5. I’ll have the situation remedied immediately,” he said. “Believe you me, heads will roll.”

Throughout dinner Michael kept up the charm and Alexis seemed to enjoy his company. As they chatted, she revealed that she was a talent agent representing many prominent news personalities and she seemed interested in the fact that Michael was an attorney.

After dinner, they skipped out on the rest of the festivities in favor of heading to Michael’s place for drinks. Behind his bar mixing a martini for her and pouring a bourbon for himself, Michael regaled Alexis with stories from his years in court, embellishing here and there for effect. She laughed in the appropriate places as she perched on a bar stool across from him. His eyes were drawn to her mesmerizing cleavage and to the shapely left leg obligingly revealed by the slit in her gown.

“Are you going to keep undressing me with your eyes all night, or are you going to man up?” she asked as she drained her glass

Michael grinned mischievously. “I’m something of a voyeur,” he said. “How about you undress while I watch?” He sauntered over to the couch and took a seat, crossing his ankle over his knee and resting his arms on the back.

Alexis slid off the stool and stood in the middle of the living room. Giving him a sly look, she reached under her left arm and unzipped the Elie Saab gown and let it slide down and pool around her black Christian Louboutins.

She reminds me of Veronica, Michael thought. They could almost be sisters. His cock responded instantly to that thought.

He smiled appreciatively at her black lace bustier with garters holding up sheer black stockings. A tiny black thong completed the ensemble. His eyes traveled back up to the creamy mounds bursting from the top of the overextended lace. He hooked a finger toward her in a ‘come hither’ motion.

She walked over and straddled him, pressing her lips to his. He’d waited as long as he could to get his hands on her glorious tits. A sharp tug allowed them to spill out over the top of the bustier and he gathered them up in his hands, hefting their weight and brushing across the sharp pink nubs with his thumbs.

Alexis, for her part, began to grind his erection with her sex, moaning lightly as his member responded favorably to her movements. As he took her left tit into his mouth, she moved her hands down to undo his pants and release his rock-hard cock. Shifting slightly, she pulled aside the thong and slid him into her, tossing back her head as he filled her wet and needy core. Her movements began in earnest as she rode him feverishly. Michael moved his hips in harmony with hers and felt his release begin to build.

He wrapped his arms around her waist and gripped her tightly as he stood, laying her on the coffee table and beginning to fuck her in earnest. “Oh, baby, you feel so good,” he cooed into her ear. Her heightened cries announced her imminent climax and he felt his own release pulsing in conjunction with the clenching of her sex. The sensation of ecstasy washed over him as his essence poured out.

He held himself over her for a moment, panting to catch his breath, before he kissed her lightly on the forehead and removed himself from her.

Kinky Love Notes
Erotic Poetry for Dominants and Submissives

Release Date: April 14, 2016
Ebook price: $2.99
Paperback price: $6.99
Genre: Love and erotic poetry, BDSM, Dominance and submission

About Kinky Love Notes

Pictures are often painted with words. Lust, love, desire, and kink are no exception. Instead of lines and lines of prose to express need and want, Kayla Lords uses simple poetry. Within these pages, you'll find haikus, couplets, and free verse with one thing in common: notes of the sensuous pleasure, kinky fun, and power exchange found between a Dominant and a submissive.

Review by Jacintha Topaz

This is a sizzling HOT book in a new-to-me genre I've never had the pleasure until now to review. Boy, am I glad I got to review it!

Lords' work first bleeped on my screen with Madame Gretchen. Since then, I've been hooked enough to expand my genre reading habits to include ... well, to my pleasant surprise, erotic poetry.

Onto the good stuff -- btw, it's ALL good. The cover image already hit some buttons. By the time I got to the dedication page, I was totally SUCKED IN. Who wouldn't be? When Lords write "I love you, Daddy" and Daddy responds in bold text:

I love you, too, babygirl.
Now show me what's mine.

The book is split into four sections: Self Pleasure, Mutual Pleasure, Rough Love, Dominant and Submissive. Every section has its own teaser image. The first image to hit off Self Pleasure is a thick-thighed woman in high heels. Nice to see alternative models -- perfect for BBW fans. The next image, once again fitfully paired for the section, kicks off Mutual Pleasure by featuring a couple in positions that scream hierarchy, top/bottom. For the Rough Love section is the flogger behind a man's back. The hottest image, hands down (for me), is the last image that accompanies the Dominant and Submissive section. You'll have to get the book to see it. :-)

If each picture is worth more than a thousand words, then I'd be happy to report that the words that Lords strings so skillfully broadcasts even more. Yes, if you look at this "little" book and only size it up based on the word count, then you're missing the point. This book is jam-PACKED with goodies, intimate notes that you'd WANT to share with yours.

Overall, a highly recommended read. Five FAN-tastic Stars!!!

Excerpt from Kinky Love Notes

The Things You Do To Me

Waiting patiently
For you. Hot and wet, dripping.
Anticipating.

You make me feel things
In every nerve ending.
Don't stop. Give me more.

You belong to me.
The taste of you imprinted
On my tongue always.

If Your 2016 New Year's Resolution is to Debut as an Indie Author... #startup

12/31/2015

Picture
Okay, I'm biased. Very biased. I write romance and erotic fiction. So of course you'd see a ring on it. The photo. I'm talking about the above photo. Of course. Yes, yes.

Disclaimer aside, I'm writing this short guide as a way to pay back to my community of indie authors who have helped me get a boost up on my own blossoming indie author career. Since I'm definitely going to fall short of ever repaying them ever, I'm going to pay it forward with this post.

Second disclaimer: I'm far from "making it." However, I'm definitely seeing consistent progress as the months go by. That's the only qualification I have, the only street cred, to provide you this info. Credentials aside, I finally bring you this mini-indie author start-up guide.

Going Indie?

Pros: Complete control over production, distribution, promotion, advertising, etc of ebook, audiobook and paperback. Don't like something? Little or no sales? Not interested in the long gap between writing and publishing? Change it. Experiment. Get real-time feedback from sales dashboards. No middleman. No boss.
Lesson: You're the boss.

Financial Gains: Higher royalty cuts direct from retail distributors, copyright ownership for life plus 70 years (yes, your grandchildren can benefit from your royalties, if you structure your estate correctly), and organizational restructuring to cut taxes if you earn high enough royalties. You'd need to consult your CPA and attorney regarding your particular situation in whatever place you happen to reside, though.
Lesson: Yes, you're an entrepreneur. Writing isn't a hobby. Writing is a business.

Cons:  The very same aspects that work for you can go against you. Yes, you're in charge of everything. However, that doesn't mean you have to do everything. That's where the experts come in. Cover artists, editors, promoters, etc. This is where the line gets blurry. Do you really want to brave it yourself or hire out? If you hire out, how can you ensure high quality and branding consistent with your products?
Lesson: Have a business plan, a publishing plan, a marketing plan, and of course, a budget. Oh, and keep track of all your income and expenses for tax filing purposes.

Products (aka Stories, Writings, Your Work)

Your unique way of spinning a story is your #1 asset. Yes, write what you love. That's your passion that keeps you spilling words on the page. Great. Go for it.

However, also notice the market. You'd last the longest and get the most financial benefit in indie if you find where your passion merges with readers' current demands. One of the great things independent publishing has over traditional publishing is the shorter time span between the final edits of a book and the day the book is actually released to the public. That means you have a higher chance of benefiting from hot trends before they get saturated and fizzle out.

Then again, if you're not certain exactly what you'd like to write and whether or not the market would embrace such a story, I'd suggest you go for it anyway and experiment.  The majority of books don't hit the ground running with the first book alone. If you've already published before, you've got fans and followers, you've got readers, then your first indie book may get more mileage than a book by a totally unknown author.

No matter what kind of author you are, don't stop at one book. These days, it may take anywhere between three to six books to actually build momentum in sales. The best way to maximize the benefits is to create a series of books that are linked somehow. For example, if you like writing about bad ass motorcycle clubs, then a whole series of books can revolve around the same club. If it proves to be successful, you can even create an offshoot of the series that focuses on a different motorcycle club. Even if you write nonfiction, you can benefit by writing a series of books related to some aspect of your niche. Perhaps you excel in coaching people in public speaking or some form of interpersonal communication. One book can be for friendships, another can be for the workplace, another about parent-child conversations, and of course you can write about intimate partnerships and so forth. See?

Got your stories, series, etc planned out, written, read/re-read, edited, revised and finalized? Great!

Email Marketing (aka KIT)

Before you move on to the next thing on your checklist, whatever you do you must include a way for readers to stay in touch with you in the back matter of your books. Okay, yes, it helps to have some sort of social media presence. You've heard of Facebook, Twitter, and so on. However, the most important thing to add is actually a subscription link to your new release newsletter.

Even before I published any work, I created social media accounts and a newsletter subscription form. Mine is here (not the best example but simple enough to do the job). You may not have any or many people on your list as you continue your indie author career. However, one day, you may just have enough to make enough preorder sales that will make the difference on release day/week and get you onto a bestseller list. So start small. Start somewhere.

While there are a lot of email marketing programs out there, a popular choice is MailChimp. You can use it for free up to a 2000-subscriber limit. You can stick the newsletter sign-up form in your bio, your email signature, your website, your cards, and so forth even if you have nothing published yet.

A great way to build your list is to offer a free book, worksheet or short story when readers sign up. (Um, haven't gotten around to doing this myself. So do as I say here; don't do as I do.)

Covers, Images and Ads

Now you've got to think about the packaging. You can look at a lot of the covers in your genre for ideas to mix and match and/or communicate with your cover designer. Readers can tell a lot by the cover of your book and also any visual ads you use to promote the book. Whether you have design experience or not, it couldn't hurt to browse through some stock images as well for ideas. Sometimes, an image would grab me so much that the story would write itself, even though I hadn't been looking for the image.

Among the free stock image trials I’ve tried, Bigstock has the best deal right now – 70 free images (5/day for 14 days). They take down your credit card at entry so they can bill 3 days in advance of the trial’s end date. So if you cancel, be sure to do so three days before. The Standard License allows you to use the images as cover art for up to 250,000 sales of your book. Thereafter, you can purchase the Extended License or switch to a fresh image, if you feel so inclined.

After you've figured out the wrapping for your book, we can go onto the different formats you can create for your writing. I've ranked the next three headings according to the highest number of sales and royalties in these three following formats: ebooks (digital), paperbacks (physical), audiobooks (audio).

Ebooks

Ebooks come in multiple formats: Kindle requires .mobi files, Nook requires .epub files, etc. You can either format your ebooks yourself by using software (Jutoh and Scrivener are the more popular ones right now, although Vellum has been highly recommended by and for Mac users).

Even if you didn't download additional software to format your ebooks, you can still get far with your plain old word processing software (Word, Pages, OpenOffice). Whatever you've used to generate your .doc file for your story can be uploaded directly to some direct publishing sites for their internal software to convert your document into their required interface.

Even though it may be a huge learning curve at the very beginning, I wholeheartedly encourage you to publish direct to the five major online retailers:
Amazon -- .doc file okay for uploading
Apple/iBooks -- epub file required for uploading
Barnes and Noble/Nook -- .doc file okay for uploading
Kobo -- .doc file okay for uploading
Google Play*  -- epub or pdf file required for uploading
*If Google Play is not currently accepting publishers, then you can go through Pronoun for now, as they currently do not take a royalty cut after the retail site (e.g., Google Play) takes theirs for hosting your product on their site.

Why go direct?

Yes, you'd have to upload your book, cover, and enter all the details into the necessary fields to publish the book. Multiply that action by X amount of times for the first edition upload and every time you update your back matter or whatnot. Yes, it can be exhausting or headache-inducing just thinking about it, yes?

The benefit of going direct, though, is that you’ll be able to keep the royalties, the reviews, and the sales rankings without having to start from scratch if you’ve gone through a middle man (an aggregator) to do the third party uploading for you.

About Aggregators: To reach other markets that may at first generate little to insignificant sales numbers, you can go through an aggregate such as Smashwords or Draft2Digital, both of which take a 10% cut from post-retail royalties. Yes, they do distribute to iBooks, BN, and Kobo. So if you want to buy yourself some time by doing one upload instead of several before you’ve gotten the hang of it, then by all means distribute through them first. Although Pronoun currently takes no cut, I have yet to find many authors using the site as an aggregator to distribute to the major online retailers. Unlike Pronoun, Smashwords and Draft2Digital also currently distribute to retail sites that do not accept direct upload from out-of-country residents, such as 24symbols (out of Spain) and Tolino (out of Germany).

A Word on ISBNs: Many digital retailers are ISBN-optional. However, there are digital retailers that do require you to have an ISBN. If you don't have one, they may provide their own free ISBN or some other form of identifier to the book. If you're serious about producing books, then hop on over to Bowker to buy your own ISBNs. The most cost-effective way of purchasing ISBNs is to have one ISBN for each format of the book regardless of which retail site you upload your book: 1 for digital (ebooks), 1 for physical (paperbacks), 1 for audio (audiobooks). Thus, if you made your first indie book available on all three formats (digital, physical, audio), you'd only need to purchase three ISBNs and have one ISBN designated for each format. (Ahem. Do as I say; don't do as I do/did.)

Imprints, A Corollary to ISBNs: If you're going to buy ISBNs, you may consider establishing an imprint, which can make your work appear more professional.

Paperbacks

Of the ones who go indie, I've seen people choose between IngramSpark and Createspace. The former charges an upload fee and additional fees for future revisions. The latter publisher, which is affiliated with Amazon, does not charge fees. In fact, if you know how to format your own files and either already own your ISBN or choose the free Createspace ISBN, you won't have to pay another penny to get your book available as a paperback.

Audiobooks

I'm still relatively new to the audiobook market. The only option I've tried is ACX, which is also affiliated with Amazon. If you upload with them exclusively to get the higher cut (40% as opposed to 25%). You can either do:
1.  A royalty share with the narrator to get the audiobook out with no upfront fees;
OR:
2. pay a flat upfront fee for production of the audiobook and earn out in the future.

My Books Are Available. Now What?

On Copyright Registration: If you haven't registered your copyright yet, you can do so via the Copyright Office, which is part of the Library of Congress in the U.S. If your book is published or made available in the U.S. and you're not sure if you can benefit from registering your copyright even if your copyright is automatic, then check out the FAQs here and do what you will.

The terrain of self-publishing and the publishing industry as a whole is constantly changing. What you may have read thus far in my post I hope is as immutable in years to come. Some things are just tried and true, you know?

Regardless of where the wind blows, if you've got your first book out then work on the next one. Each book helps market your prior books. If I had limited time or all the time in the world, I'd still write over 90% of the time and devote the rest of my time to promotion-related activities.

If you've found this post helpful, please share and/or post a comment. Thank you and happy new year!

Violetta is an executioner… of vampires. Famed for her fiery beauty and mesmerising personality, she has never failed an assignment.

Monsieur Martinet is no ordinary vampire, though. He is a master at his craft and can control humans with the merest flick of his eyelids. The vampire huntress with the porcelain skin and flaming red hair has killed all of his brethren, without exception. He now seeks the ultimate revenge: her submission in HIS bed.

If he’s allowed to stay alive long enough, that is.

twitteradd676

Do You Want to Fight Me?

‘Do you want to fight me, princess? Do you want to slam those little fists of yours against my chest and call me names?’

She didn’t answer him. Her voice was locked away within her throat once more, at his request. He had obviously heard enough this evening. Her job was to lay there and look pretty, she guessed. Oh dear God.

Black ropes slithered up her limbs, and they coiled around her flesh in a serpentine fashion, winding themselves tighter and tighter, tugging at her limbs. No.

‘I want you spread wide open for me, Violetta. That way you’ll be ready to be taken at a moment’s notice. I’ll also be able to see how aroused you are for me, and I think you like this body of mine, don’t you, Vi?

Her grunt of protest remained trapped inside her head, but she knew he heard it.
‘Oh, I know you find me attractive. Now we’re going to work on needs, wants and desires. I’m going to train you to be desperate for the slightest touch my hand may choose to bestow upon your flesh. We’re going to make you a hungry, panting, pathetic little slave who lives for nothing more than to pleasure and serve the capricious notions of her master. I’ve developed quite an overactive imagination over the years, I’ll have you know. We’re going to have so much fun together, you and I.’

The words were lost in her head, but they echoed over and over. The rope was reeling her arms and legs tightly into the wooden corners of the four poster bed and she was beginning to resemble a large ‘X’ shape. Try as she might, bracing her arms and legs against the firm tugs did not help in the slightest. Finally, she was splayed out to the ropes satisfaction and the pressure against her wrists and ankles lessoned slightly.

Martinet ran his index and middle finger up and around the small ridge of her ankle. He watched intently as she sucked in air. At this moment in time her mind did not like his fingers upon her. Her body called her a liar, though, and trembled at the ridiculously light touch.
His fingers then dived under the glistening organza of her gown and crept up a shapely calf. Tiny little steps that did little more than tickle her, but she got noticeably more nervous as they tiptoed higher and higher.

‘You never thanked me for the arm, you know.’

Violetta told him, in no uncertain terms, just what he could do with his thank you.
‘Tsk, tsk. A lady never swears.’ He grinned at her, letting the pads of his fingers brush up against the delicate skin of her inner thigh. The nervous pounding of her heart and the flush of heat that turned her cheeks from alabaster to cherry almost instantly, told him all he needed to know. His fingers wandered higher.

‘Don’t. Stop.’ The whispered plea inside her head was frantic.

‘Oh, I don’t intend to,’ he said, deliberately misunderstanding her and without warning his hand clamped around her sex. She rose up into him and gasped. It appeared that her body was once again under her control. Oh who was she kidding? The vamp played her better than Hendrix played the guitar. He knew when to stroke, when to cajole and, more importantly, when to strike.

‘My goodness, you’re not wearing any panties,’ he exclaimed with a devilish gleam in his eyes. ‘Why you wanton little…’ Martinet didn’t finish his last word. Now that Violetta had regained the use of her voice, she was about to use it at the top of her lungs. Unfortunately, Martinet was once again one step ahead of her, and his face was rapidly descending towards hers. The scream that had been bursting to escape just seconds ago, curdled in her throat. Her body pulled against the ropes. Not to get away from him, as it should have, but to move closer. She wanted those talented lips on hers. She wanted his hands on her fevered, naked flesh and already, she craved the intense pleasure that he could so easily bestow upon her. Covering her lips with his own, he breathed her in. She, on the other hand, couldn’t breathe at all. His hands were running up her arms, tracing delicate, rambling patterns on her flesh, while his tongue might have been forked like a dragon’s, for it spilled sparkling flames of fire wherever it landed. The ropes rubbed tightly against her wrists and ankles, but she didn’t give a damn. She drank him in whole and writhed sinuously underneath his body, begging for more of the same.

‘Isn’t it hideously embarrassing to be this attracted to your jailor?’ His lips left hers with a soft pop and for a moment she just blinked in surprise. Her body was still pulling against her bonds, trying to get ever closer to her talented antagonist. It was horribly humiliating. That alone made her furious.

Christina (C.P.) Mandara was born in the UK, but has spent most of her life travelling the world. She speaks three languages and has been chiefly employed in the fields of finance and travel. Her favourite city is Sydney and her favourite holiday destination is the south of France.

She loves keeping fit and enjoys running, cycling, surfing and sailing. In her spare time she’s usually cuddled up with a good book, exploring the countryside or baking in the kitchen. In fact, she loves her kitchen so much she’s one of few woman who wouldn’t mind being tied to it! Her first and foremost love is writing, however, and more often than not you’ll find her on a laptop spinning tales of romance, erotica or dark, paranormal fantasies.

Milly Taiden
Hi! I'm Milly Taiden (AKA April Angel). I love to write sexy stories. They're usually either paranormal or contemporary with a large dose of heat. My paranormal stories can be anything from wolf-shifters (my favorites) to witches, demons and anything in between.

I was born in the prettiest part of the Caribbean known as the Dominican Republic. Currently, I live in New York City with my hubby, the bossy kiddo and our little dog "Needy Speedy". Don't ask.

I am addicted to shoe shopping, chocolate (but who isn't, right?) and Dunkin' Donuts coffee.

Come on over and visit me! I love to meet new readers!

Lisa Hughey
Lisa Hughey has been writing romance since the fourth grade, which was also about the time she began her love affair with spies. Harriet and Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys later gave way to James Bond and Lara Croft and Jason Bourne.

Exploring the complex nature of a profession that requires subterfuge and lies fascinates her. She loves combining her two passions into fiction. As evidenced by her Black Cipher Files series.

Archangel Rafe was her first foray into the paranormal but after spending time in the Angelic Realm, it won't be her last. At their heart, the Seven novels are about the dynamics of family relationships. But the really hot Archangels don't hurt.

And recently she's been immersed in the Stone Family novellas, four stories about a blended family of brothers and sister who have a lot more in common than they realize. But of course she couldn't just write about family and romance. There are complex plots, bad guys, and suspense too.

Lisa loves to hear from readers and has various places you can connect with her, although, shh, Twitter is her favorite.

Jessie Donovan
Jessie Donovan wrote her first story at age five, and after discovering the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey in junior high, realized that people actually wanted to read stories like those floating around inside her head. From there on out, she was determined to tap into her over-active imagination and write a book someday.

After living abroad for five years and earning degrees in Japanese, Anthropology, and Secondary Education, she buckled down and finally wrote her first full-length book. While that story will never see the light of day, it laid the world-building groundwork of what would become her debut paranormal romance, Blaze of Secrets.

Jessie loves to interact with readers. When not reading a book or traipsing around some foreign country on a shoestring, can often be found on Facebook and Twitter.

M is for Masters. I love me a good read! So this post is entirely dedicated to my favorite BDSM MaleDom characters by six of my favorite authors, appearing in alphabetical order by first name.

Of course, this list is partial--partial to me--and there are many more lovely Masters to meet in other books written by other authors. However, I digress.

Click on each name to get to authors' websites below.
(Ladies first)
  • Cherise Sinclair
  • Eliza Gayle
  • Kallypso Masters
  • Lexi Blake
  • Shoshanna Evers
  • Jason Luke (buy link only, can't find official website for this author)
In fact, I love the characters so much that I created a unique graphic below for my favorite hardcore BDSM Dominants/Masters. :-)

Remember, these favorites are just a snapshot. Who knows what I'll like a year from now when I meet more Dominants between the covers? ;-)

Readers have a list of their favorite dominant characters. Here's a running list (yes, these dominant men show up in a series of books and some to a screen near you):
  • Christian Grey (over 100 million books sold of E. L. James' trilogy, film opening in time for Valentine's Day 2015)
  • Gideon Cross (I LOVE Sylvia Day, optioned by Lionsgate for TV adaptation)
  • James Cavendish (R. K. Lilley is so cool, too!)
  • Ethan Blackstone (Raine Miller's creation)
  • Damien Stark (J Kenner/Julie Kenner's creation)
  • Chris Merit (product of Lisa Renee Jones, TV show optioned to STARZ)
  • Jesse Ward (the one in Jodi Ellen Malpas's trilogy)

Picture
A Dominant does not need to appear authoritarian, gruff, aloof, and guarded. To earn the respect and trust a submissive needs to bare and surrender her heart, mind, body and soul, the Dominant needs to:
  • be emotionally accessible
  • exert power and mastery over oneself
  • maintain balance and control of self and situation/scene at hand

I almost wanted to re-title this post "Battle of the Alphas" or "Duel of the Dominants" but the good thing about Book Boyfriends is that we can "cheat" under separate covers... They'll never meet each other. :-)
