A wolf!
Terror seized his heart. He was so dead. He didn’t leave a foster home only to land in some feral animal’s belly in a faraway unknown terrain. He wasn’t going to go down like this. He steadied his grip on his flashlight, his new weapon of choice. He didn’t know much about wolves but decided that he’d at least go down fighting.
On pure instinct, Skid charged at the twelve o’clock—only to collide with a mass of fur that smacked the air right out of him before he landed flat on his back with a thud. The animal pinned his arms and legs to the ground, ready to tear him limb from limb. Worse, he could do nothing about it.
“Who sent you?”
Shocked speechless from the curt question only a breath away from his face, Skid could only gape at nothingness. His eyes hadn’t adjusted to the dark after his flashlight had flown out of his hands. He couldn’t see his attacker, but clearly his very human-sounding attacker could.
“He’s a grey coat,” said Ten O’Clock.
“Silence!” Twelve O’Clock roared before firing another query. “Did you start the fire, Human?”
